My learning about dog behaviour started as a child.  However, it is as an adult that I became most confused about dog behaviour.  I attended numerous dog trainers, trying to work out how to get desirable behaviours from my dogs.

I was never after anything fancy.  I just wanted the basics.  ie:  happy dog, who wasn't barking out of control, who was content, who could walk on a lead, and who could sit, drop, and stay.

Like the vast majority of people, I've been pretty disillusioned with the majority of dog trainers.  I've spent a lot of money and time learning techniques that did not produce the results, and more often than not, required me to enforce my will on dogs, sometimes using check chains.

There are various trainers I follow the work of.  Whilst some trainers will insist that you follow no other techniques other than your own, I believe this is simply arrogance, and it is important we continue our learning and growing by reading and understanding our dogs as best as possible.

That being said, there are some trainers who I think are dreadful - some of those covered in TV programs are some of the worst.  Those that use physical attacks on the dogs, or who insist on putting dogs on treadmills or similar to exhaust them, are not trainers I recommend.

Nowadays, I still have dogs.  Lots of dogs.  I show, breed, and judge dogs, and do my best to help my puppy people learn the best techniques.   

With the techniques I recommend, it's about getting us right back to basics. These techniques help us understand exactly what the dog requires.

Now I help people implement these techniques in their homes with their dogs.  To see a change in dog behaviour is just a wonderful thing.  And this change is done without violence.  It's done by implementing a few simple techniques in a consistent and friendly way.
