Take the opportunity to learn how to be the best leader for your dog.
I want to be straight with you. You can spend a lot of time and money searching for good books and dvds on dog behaviour. You already know this.
Save yourself a lot of money by only buying the books that are the best.
There are many, many dog trainers out there. 100% of these people have the right intention. In my opinion, many of them have it wrong. And this includes nearly all of those who have tv programs!
Let me tell you this - just because a dog behaviourist features on Oprah, doesn't mean they are a person who has it right.
We all want to get a good relationship with our dogs. If you don't have the relationship with your dog that you want, this is an indication that the methods you are using are not working. It was Einstein who said something like, "insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result". The same goes for dog training. eg:
Is shouting at your dog not getting the desired result? Well, you need to change your technique.
Do you continue to try and jerk your dog into walking well on a leash? Well that's never going to work, so it's time to try your technique.
There are a bunch authors I recommend, and I will shortly list their books here as well. I recommend you contact your local library and have a good read of a range of books before you commit to buy. Once you have settled in your own mind which is best, then you can make the investment in the book. You're an adult. You can critically analyse books. You'll have a pretty good chance of understanding what sounds like rubbish, and what sounds like common sense.
